Matt was a consummate professional businessman for 22 years, the last 11 years spent as Vice
President, Principal, and Portfolio Manager at the prestigious investment advisory firm, Bahl &
Gaynor Investment Counsel. He was a sought after speaker, and his investment commentaries
were frequently featured in the national business media. Matt regularly appeared on Bloomberg
Television, CNBC, Fox Business News, Fox News, NPR, as well as in Reuters, USA Today, The
Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and many more. He was also profiled in Barron's and
Pensions & Investments. He was often quoted in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati Business
Courier, Cincinnati Magazine and Cincy.
Prior to joining Bahl & Gaynor, Matt was a Vice President, Principal, and Portfolio Manager for
Apex Capital Management in Dayton, Ohio. From 2000 to 2003, he was an Investment
Committee member, managed the firm's largest relationships and was the Chief Compliance
Officer. From 1992 to 2000, Matt was a Vice President, Institutional Portfolio Manager and
Director of Marketing for Dean Investment Associates in Dayton, Ohio. He was also a member
of the firm's Executive Committee, Central Investment Committee and was responsible for many
of the firm's largest clients.
He served on many prestigious Boards including: the Xavier University President's Advisory
Council, Xavier Student Investment Fund, Xavier's Williams College of Business Finance Board
of Executive Advisors, Xavier's Williams College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series as
Chairperson, Xavier's Williams College of Business Student Mentor program, Xavier's Rugby
Football Club, Executive Committee Member, the University of Dayton Flyer Investments
Advisory Board as well as UD's Student Portfolio Management Competition (2006 - 2014 RISE
Forum Judge and featured speaker). Matt also served as an Investment Advisory Board
Member for The Cure Starts Now. He was honored to be chosen for the Cincinnati Business
Courier's 2009 "Forty Under 40" class. He was a regular patron of St. Jude Children's Hospital.
He was a devout St. Gabriel's parishioner.
A good night's sleep in Matt's home typically followed a Reds or Bengals victory. A
perfect night's sleep followed any Xavier basketball win, especially one deep into the
NCAA basketball tournament. Matt was one of Xavier's most passionate fans. He and
his family could always be found in their court-side seats at home games and they also
enjoyed traveling to numerous post-season road games. The entire family is also huge
Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans and love every victory, especially the home opening
game vs. Rice, which they attended this past Labor Day weekend. In 2005, when Notre
Dame beat Michigan, they even watched the game in the delivery room minutes before
Caroline was born.
Matt was a staunch conservative Republican and a tireless patriot. He loved everything
the US Navy Seals represent and what they do to protect our country. Matt expects all
of us to vote for his close friend, Hamilton County Commissioner Chris Monzel. He also
fully expects votes for Ohio Governor John Kasich, and for anyone opposing Hillary
Clinton in 2016.
Matt lived his Catholic faith daily, loved his country, pursued his profession with a
devoted passion, but most importantly he loved his family with all his heart and soul.
Everything he did, he did for the love of his family. All of Matt's free time was spent with
his family. The Village of Glendale, with its quaint and laid-back style, was dear to his
heart. He will be forever remembered as the fun-loving but dedicated "Matty Ice" by his
morning boot-camp brothers. At his annual beer party, chug-offs popped up at his
choosing and awards were given to the lady wearing the highest heels ... And "Man
Cards" were revoked if you couldn't chug like a champion.
Please remember the Matt that made you smile and laugh hysterically; his unmistakable
and contagious laugh, his gregarious personality, and his routine, joking plea that you
dedicate your efforts to all the children and single moms everywhere. That plea is
important now more than ever for Patrick, Caroline, and Susan.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 9:00 PM Thursday, September 11th at Vorhis
& Ryan Funeral Home at 11365 Springfield Pike in Springdale, Ohio. The Mass of
Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 12th at 9:30 AM at Bellarmine Chapel
on Xavier University's campus, 3800 Victory Parkway in Cincinnati, Ohio. Matt will rest
at Oak Hill Cemetery in Springdale, Ohio.
After the death of Matt's brother Brian in 2008, he started a fund at Xavier University for
any student in financial distress, regardless of their GPA, to be able to stay in school.
Matt's personal goal this year was to raise $150,000 so that these funds would go on in
perpetuity. In lieu of flowers and in an effort to eliminate the annual fundraising
responsibilities going forward, please consider a memorial gift to help reach Matt's goal.
Gifts can be made to "The McCormick Brothers Memorial Fund," at Xavier University,
3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45207, 513-745-3314.
Words cannot express the outpouring of love and support Susan and the children are
receiving. We are eternally grateful. God bless you all.
