Helen C. Kereiakes, a wonderful wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, quietly passed away joined by family in her residence at the Kenwood Star on November 25. Helen will be most fondly remembered as the grandmother, the YiaYia (in Greek) who always showed up. She was there on every sideline, cheering on all 18 of her grandchildren through countless sporting events, rain or shine. She and her late husband of almost 67 years, Dr James G. “Jim” Kereiakes were famous for keeping their trunk packed with school spirit wear from four different schools and two folding chairs, ready to support whoever was playing next. They were the cheering section not only for sports, but for every play, performance, and milestone. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Helen was raised in Cincinnati and attended both Walnut Hills and Withrow High schools along with the University of Cincinnati. Helen and Jim were actively involved with the Greek Orthodox Church where they were integral to moving the church to its current address on Winton Road. In addition, she was proud to co-found the annual Panegyri Greek Festival, celebrating her heritage with the community she loved. Helen was also very involved with the Indian Hill School District where she was instrumental with regards to the location and construction of the high school football stadium. Her strength and determination were inspirational and provided the driving force for her family. With her vivacious personality and bright smile, no one was a stranger.
Later in life, Helen found joy in teaching her grandchildren the game of golf, sharing patience, skill, and plenty of laughs along the way. Her home was always open, her heart always full — welcoming friends and neighbors. No one left her kitchen without delicious Greek food, warmth, and lively conversation.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Dr James G Kereiakes and her only sibling, Thomas Christy, of Orange County California. She leaves behind four children, Dr Dean (Anne) and Dr Thomas (Annette) Kereiakes, Penny Pomeranz (Dr Stephen) and Beth Brendamour (Doug) as well as eighteen grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Helen’s legacy is one of devotion, generosity, and steadfast love — a life well lived in full support of others.
