UNITED STATES ARMY
VIETNAM WAR VETERAN
John will be remembered for his sense of service and duty, as well as his sense of humor and warmth. John served three tours of duty in Vietnam, volunteering for his second and third tours with the personal hope of sparing another young man.
John was the beloved husband of Jennifer (née Murray) Birkenshaw, to whom he was married for 52 years, until the time of his death, and the devoted father of Shawn (Angel) Perkins, Justin (Roxanne) Birkenshaw, and Meagan (Mark) Guenther. He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. John was the dear brother of Mary Morris and Elizabeth Walters, and was preceded in death by his siblings Arthur, Christine, Nancy, and Janet.
John worked for 44 years as a loyal employee of Ford Motor Company. A skilled machinist, he took pride in his attention to detail, problem solving abilities, and specialized technical knowledge.
John valued belonging, connectedness, and contribution — to his country, his community, his friends, and his family. He gave freely of his talents and time through volunteer work.
From baling hay to sitting on the dock of a bay to enjoying the company of friends at a local bar, John lived a life of experiences that challenged him, shaped his perspectives, and fulfilled his curiosity. A creative gardener, he enjoyed designing installments on his acreage, tending to plants, and observing nature. He also delighted in elaborate family pranks.
