MURPHY, John Patrick "Murph". Beloved husband of Maryann (nee Marx) Murphy. Devoted father of Heather Bell and Sean Murphy. Loving grandfather of Abby (Armando) King, Ian Bell, and Aidan Bell. Dear brother of Jay Hatch, Robert Hatch, Terry (Bill) Storey; and the late Jon Hatch and Jason Ott. Preceded in death by his parents, John M. Murphy and Anna Hatch.
Murph dedicated his life to service for his country and community. He was a decorated United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving in Vietnam; and a pillar of the city of Norwood, Ohio. Joining the Norwood Police Department 1973, John ultimately retired as Chief of Police in 2000. After his retirement, John served as the City’s Safety-Service Director from 2020 to 2021 and was a proud Fourth Degree member of the Norwood Knights of Columbus.
Murph passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2026 at age 76.
Visitation will be held at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 5501 Montgomery Rd., Norwood, OH 45212 on Thursday, March 12, 2026 from 5-8PM. F.O.P. #74 service will be held at 7:15PM, followed by Knights of Columbus prayer service at 7:30PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2420 Drex Ave., Norwood, OH 45212 on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 11AM. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
