William “Bill” Johnstone, a beloved husband of 62 years, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 25, 2026, in Sterling, Ohio, following a period of declining health. Born on March 1, 1936, he lived a remarkable life filled with love, adventure, and community involvement.
Bill graduated from Greenhills High School in 1954 and further pursued his passion for science by studying chemistry at John Carroll and Xavier University. After receiving his education, he dedicated many years to his career, working as a chemical technician at General Electric Aircraft Engines until his retirement in 1998.
An adventurous skydiver, Bill delighted in leaping from planes at Coney Island and Kings Island. His love for the outdoors extended to hobbies such as gardening, bird watching, hiking, and traveling, but he found his greatest joy in spending quality time with his beloved grandchildren.
In addition to his passions, Bill proudly served his country, having been drafted into the United States Army and serving in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Bill was deeply involved in his community, serving as an active parishioner at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Greenhills. He touched many lives as a Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher, and member of the adoration and rosary groups.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Stephanie (née Clayton) Johnstone, whom he married on June 15, 1963; and his children, Dave (Jo Anne) Johnstone, Bob (Noelle) Johnstone, Mary (Gary) Besancon, and Cheryl (Larry) Carpenter. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Kate (Rick) Krupinski, Zach (Hallie) Johnstone, Kennedy (Michael) Mitchell, Logan Johnstone, Josh (Heidi) Besancon, Samantha Besancon, Megan (Nate) Spaid, Nick Besancon, Lucas (Monique) Carpenter, Jessica Carpenter, Julia Carpenter, Jenna Carpenter, Christian Carpenter, and Carly Carpenter; along with eight great-grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his siblings, Harold Johnstone, Patricia Cordova, and Scott (Mary) Johnstone; as well as sister in law, Mary (Ed’s wife) Johnstone; sister in law, Pat Johnstone; and brother in law, Joe Puricelli.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruth (nee Weaver) Johnstone; and several siblings including, Helen (Ben) Ceremeli, Ed Johnstone, Ruth Puricelli, Tom Johnstone; as well as brother-in-law, Luis Cordova; and sister-in-law, Carol Johnstone.
In celebration of Bill's life and the love he shared, visitation with family will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 1-4PM at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 11365 Springfield Pk, Springdale, OH 45246. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 11:30AM at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 17 Farragut Rd., Greenhills, OH 45218. Inurnment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
