Joan Smith

September 14, 2022

On Wednesday September 14th, Joan K Smith (Hammond) beloved wife and mother, passed away in Chattanooga TN.  She was 91. Born to Wallace and Helen Hammond, of Lockland, Joan was a UC graduate with a master’s in education from Xavier U and member or Kappa Delta sorority.  Joan was predeceased by her husband Philip M Smith, married 49 years before his passing.  She is survived by their children Jennifer Pope, Mitchell Smith, grandchildren Brenna Pope, Christopher Pope, Emily and Alex Smith, and great grandchildren Zoey and Bennet Lewis.

Joan was known for her perpetual smile, friendly manner, sense of humor and quirky sayings. She will be remembered as a fun hostess who never met a stranger, a loving and supportive Mom and wife.

Joan spent most of her teaching years at Three Rivers Co-op Pre-school teaching her favorite ages, 3 and 4 years old.  She retired from there after many years of service. She enjoyed golf at GEEAA with friends, and Bridge, where she and Phil earned Masters points playing duplicate bridge.  Summers were spent at the lake in Michigan as much as possible. Joan volunteered with her church and in scouting.

The graveside service will be at Rest Haven Cemetery Mausoleum, on Oct 7 at 2 pm, all welcome.

IN lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Three Rivers Co-op Pre-school,  6734 Bridgetown Rd. Cincinnati, OH 45248

In her memory.

Kappa Delta is a sisterhood devoted to the pursuit of those things honorable, beautiful and highest. The sorority’s principles are ageless: the ideals of honor, beauty and truth which are exemplified in Kappa Delta’s values. The creed of the sorority beseeches her members to strive to be truer, wiser, more faithful, more loving and more noble.  In becoming a member of Kappa Delta,  sisters pledged to live her life in a vast sisterhood of incalculable strength, a national force for good. It was this spirit of love and friendship which served to draw her into an ever-closer harmony with our sisterhood. Her life was lived effectively and grandly. We, along with her Kappa Delta sisters, give thanks for her beautiful life as she became an inspiration, strength and blessing to all those whose lives were touched by hers.
